Testing/Evaluation

The Beginning of Lasting Solutions

Testing for various learning disorders, such as dyslexia and dysgraphia, can provide direction to what type of intervention or other help should be given to individuals who have been struggling in reading, writing, and spelling.

Many of these are inherited conditions, and not necessarily rare. The symptoms can be mild in one person and severe in another. Dyslexia can be diagnosed in children as young as age 5. Testing allows for appropriate remedial programs to be given so that an individual with dyslexia can learn to read, write, and spell proficiently.

No single test will confirm most learning disorders. Rather, a battery of tests that focus on the expressive and receptive areas of language are given.

Diagnostic Testing for Dyslexia

This is the gold standard. Adults may need a diagnosis for dyslexia. A diagnosis may be required for adults in the workplace for accommodations or for testing for workplace advancement. Students transitioning to college are often required to have a diagnosis for college testing accommodations or college entrance with accommodations. Currently, most colleges require diagnostic testing within 2 years of college entrance. Younger students may benefit by having a diagnosis at an earlier age to track their history of dyslexia. Some schools prefer a diagnosis before providing accommodations. It may be, that a parent wants to know determinedly whether the symptoms and struggles being experienced are due to dyslexia. The process at Successful Learning for diagnostic testing is:
  • Family, developmental, and educational history of individual to be tested will be reviewed during an interview with Cheryl Anthony, MS Ed.
  • Language Processing, Dysgraphia, and Academic Testing 3.5 – 4.0 hours, varies depending on child.
  • Social/emotional history of individual to be tested will be reviewed during an interview with Dr. Sharon Gavora, Psy. D.
  • Cognitive Testing 2.0 hours, varies depending on individual
  • Final Meeting Approx. 2.5 hours At this meeting parents (or adult individuals) are presented with their child’s (individual) written report. The meeting will consist of a review of the testing sessions and report information. You will receive information about how to tell your child he/she has dyslexia, how to work with your child’s school, and what kind of remediation should be given. Adults who have been tested will be informed about how to work with their college or workplace. Information about local resources will also be shared.

In-Depth Dyslexia Screening
Simple Dyslexia Screening

Some dyslexia screening provides only the basic information to understand your child’s learning needs.  This screening provides a more in-depth approach of knowledge, across the content areas, and your child’s levels of performance (English, math, reading, spelling, language processing, auditory discrimination, and handwriting).  It also provides assessment of language processing areas which are often the underlying weaknesses related to dyslexia.

This is a generally a three appointment process:  2 testing sessions and 1 parent meeting.

  • Family, developmental, and educational history of child to be tested will be reviewed
  • Parent Interview
  • Academic Testing  Time varies depending on individual
  • Screening for Dyslexia
  • Screening for Dysgraphia
  • Final Parent Meeting Approx. 2.0 hours
At this meeting parents are presented with their child’s written report. The meeting will consist of a review of the testing sessions and report information.  You will receive information about how to tell your child he/she has dyslexia, how to work with your child’s school, and what kind of remediation should be given. Information about local resources will also be shared.
  • Family, developmental, and educational history of child to be tested will be briefly reviewed
  • Screening (no dysgraphia assessment)

Assessing Dyscalculia

Many students with math difficulties just give up, thinking they will never be able to understand math or correctly complete math calculations; even those required for daily living. But there is hope!

Just as we need to know WHY as student is struggling in reading or in writing, we need to know why a student is struggling in math. We need to know what skills are lacking- what skills are needing additional instruction.  It is also helpful to know about the innate processing speed and memory of the student. These abilities also impact an individual’s abilities to complete the complex and varied steps in solving mathematical equations.

Assessment is key to determining what foundational skills are lacking and which are intact.

We provide an assessment that help us understand more about your child’s mathematical needs. Once assessment is completed we will share the results and follow a plan that targets those needs.
