OUR SERVICES

Our services are designed to help your family get a correct diagnosis and the right remedial program if your child has dyslexia.  We prescreen all families.  If the symptoms of dyslexia are not present we will refer you to other professionals who may be able to help you.

Testing and Tutoring

Why testing?

Dyslexia is hereditary. It is one of the most inherited conditions.  It is not rare, and research has shown that 1 in 5 people struggle due to dyslexia. It can be mild in one person and severe in another.  Dyslexia can be diagnosed in children as young as five years.  Yet, many people struggle for years and do not understand why.  Testing allows for appropriate remedial programs to be applied so that an individual with dyslexia can learn to read, write, and spell proficiently.

No single test will confirm dyslexia.  Therefore, a battery of tests that focuses on the expressive and receptive areas of language are given:  expressive and receptive oral language, expressive written language and receptive written language.  Dyslexia is a language processing problem.

The Testing Process
Parent Interview:  Approx.1.5 hours
Student Testing :  Approx. 4.0 hours, varies
depending on child.  Testing is usually
broken up into two sessions.
Final Parent Interview   Approx. 2 hours

Cheryl Anthony, Certified Dyslexia Testing Specialist, will go
over the detailed results of the tests. She will share her
conclusion and recommendations.  You will receive information about
how to tell your child he/she has dyslexia, how to work with your
school, and what kind of remediation should be given.
Information about local resources will also be shared.

Tutoring
Tutoring consists of two 50 minute, one-one sessions per week.  Your child will be screened to determine which program he/she will need to start with first.

Cheryl Anthony, MS Ed., Reading Specialist,  is a also an Certified Tutor at the Master's Level in the Barton Reading & Spelling System, an Orton-Gillingham influenced, simultaneously mutlisensory, explicit and systematic phonics program.  She is one of only a handful of tutors certified at this level in this system across the country.

The Barton Reading & Spelling System begins with phonemic awareness. Most remedial programs skip phonemic awareness although it is one of the essential building block in learning to read.  The program also includes the following levels:  Consonants and Short Vowels, Closed Syllables and Units, Syllable Division and Vowel Teams, Prefixes and Suffixes, Six Reasons for Silent-E, Vowel-R Syllables, Advanced Vowel Teams, Influences of Foreign Languages, Greek Words and Latin Roots.  After finishing these levels students will be able to read and spell at a ninth-grade level.

Cheryl also uses The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program for Reading, Spelling & Speech (LiPS) with students who are not yet ready for the Barton System.  She is also trained in Visualizing/Verbalizing another Lindamood Bell program for those who can read, but have trouble understanding what they have read.

Cheryl utilizes Handwriting Without Tears for students with dysgraphia.  She is currently working on becoming a certified handwriting specialist through HWT.

Cheryl helps children learn the multiplication tables and division facts using a fun, easy, and memory engaging program.
